With a couple hours to kill, Allie didn’t think twice about where she would go. Twenty minutes after leaving the clinic, she was entering the Seattle Police Department’s headquarters on 5th Avenue. She went straight to the welcome desk and inquired about the archives department.

“That’ll be down in the basement,” the officer said. “Elevators are right over there. You’ll need to show a valid driver’s license for access to any documents.”

In the basement, she navigated a narrow hallway that reeked of floor cleaner and the damp, stale scent of musty paper. At the end, she approached a caged window, revealing rows upon rows of towering shelving units behind it.

The sergeant stationed there had a stocky build, his flabby arms stretching the short sleeves of his uniform. His round face bore the faint beginnings of a double chin, and his tired eyes suggested they hadn’t been privy to a good laugh in years. Perched on a stool, he leaned an elbow lazily on the high counter. When he glanced up from his phone, his expression registered no enthusiasm, as though dealing with her presence was the greatest inconvenience of his day. Allie wasn’t surprised—this was exactly the kind of post reserved for those who only kept their job thanks to someone in high places pulling the strings.

“Help you?”

“Yes, I need to look up an old case.”

“You got a case number?”

“No. Just a name. Johanna Bishop.” She gave him the date when the case was first opened.

“Okay, hold on.” His fingers moved slowly across his keyboard.

You’re not going to find anything there. But she waited patiently anyway.

Sure enough, a minute later, he shook his head. “Don’t see anything. Spell the name.”

She did, only to get the same response. “I called last month, and they were going to set the files aside for me. At the time, they were in your system. Would you go back in the stacks and try to locate them?”

His expression remained one of boredom. “You want me to look in the back for files that my system says aren’t here?”

“That’s right.” Irritation crawled through her belly. She forced herself to stay calm. “It’s important.”

He sighed as if he had just been asked to clean the floor with a toothbrush. “Hold on.” He wandered off, leaving Allie alone with her thoughts.

After her first case took her back to her family’s old cabin up in Whatcom County, Allie decided it was time to revisit the mystery of her mother’s disappearance. When Allie was seven, Johanna Bishop had ventured into a troubled neighborhood in Seattle and vanished without a trace. Her car was eventually recovered by police, but her fate remained a mystery.

Allie had spent most of her youth grappling with the devastating truth that her father was a serial killer. It wasn’t until her mother’s journal was unearthed during that first case that Allie felt ready to confront the unanswered questions about Johanna’s fate.

But digging into the past had proven more challenging than she anticipated.

When Allie first called the Seattle
